How Crystals Create Rainbows of Light

Crystals refract light by slowing it down and bending it as it passes from air into the denser material, creating sparkle and color separation (dispersion). Due to their orderly atomic structure, crystals often split light into multiple rays, a phenomenon called birefringence, which can produce double images or intense flashes of color.
